Design for Diffusion

Designing for Diffusion (D4D) Special Program Area

The aim of the Designing for Diffusion Scientific Program Area is to conduct observational and intervention research about the spread of evidence-based practices, programs, and technologies (i.e., innovations). Studies in this SPA will focus on innovations that are past the point of external validity testing, or that have diffused among many adopters without external validity testing. We will study innovations from both the perspective of potential and actual adopters and implementers, and from the perspective of the sources of innovations. Dissemination research will focus on the design of purposive attempts to communicate innovations to potential adopters. Diffusion studies will focus on uptake of those innovations especially in terms of reach and adoption. Implementation research will focus on "stage two" implementation, past the time of dissemination and adoption, when users try innovations and sometimes adapt them to their needs under uncontrolled real-world conditions. This portfolio of studies will also focus on sustainability research; i.e., predictors of and indicators of sustained use of innovations, including their discontinuance and or displacement.
